DURELL VINEYARD

Durell is considered one of the top five vineyards in Sonoma County, as it consistently produces wines of great depth and complexity. Over twenty five wines from Durell have been given a rating of 92 + including wines from Kistler, Patz & Hall and Chateau St. Jean.

ROCKY SOIL

Grapes are typically indigenous to the Mediterranean areas of the world where most farming is all but impossible. This is mainly due to similar soils as we enjoy here. The rocky soil of Durell is derived from volcanic parent material known as basalt, which has a low concentration of magnesium but very rich in minerals, ideal for cultivating premium luxury–brand grapes.

COOL CLIMATE

The gentle slopes of Durell sit on the very interface of the valley floor and the higher coastal hill country.

Durell gets the last bit of fog that clings to the hills before it dissipates over the remainder of the valley. Conversely, as a benefit to us, we get some of the warmth and heat from the valley floor in the same exact areas. This combination of cool mornings, breezy afternoons and warmer days through the summer months are the best conditions for steady ripening.

EARTH FRIENDLY

As farmers, we make our living from the environment, so we would be the last ones to damage the environment for our own short term benefit.

This philosophy defines our decision making process. From new vineyard layout and design to harvesting the fruit, we try to look at and include more than just the biology or the economics of winegrowing when making any decision.

IDEAL LOCATION

Durell Vineyard, situated on a 200 acre lot, bisecting the Sonoma Valley, Sonoma Coast and Carneros AVAs is a very special locale. With the Pacific Ocean 30 miles west, the northern stretches of San Francisco Bay just 10 miles south, and a 2,400 foot mountain range immediately north, we are blessed with a unique configuration of land.
